February 2022
Where does the time go? Two months since DisCon? I feel like the Pacific Northwest is experiencing reverse time dilation. Hark the sun is reemerging! So is science fiction fandom, which means more activities and planning in store for our Worldcon bid for Seattle in 2025.
Our Membership Launch at DisCon was a success!

At DisCon III Seattle 2025 launched its membership drive, announced our first-refusal agreement with Visit Seattle, and showed off pictures from our hard hat tour of the Summit addition to the Washington State Convention Center, still under construction but destined to be the home of Worldcon in 2025. The two representatives we had onsite were not enough to host a room party, but we distributed ribbons and sold travel mugs and umbrellas while having dozens of conversations per day about Seattle (and working staff jobs to boot!). We were impressed at the level of enthusiasm for the bid and made it to the end with no competitive bids forming against us. The talk of DisCon was the selection of Chengdu, China to host Worldcon in 2023, our site selection year.

Announcing Monthly Bid Volunteer Meetings

We are scheduling open bid volunteer meetings, expected to run monthly on the first Sunday through the site selection vote in Chengdu.  Come to the first one on March 6!  We are meeting at 10 a.m. Pacific Time on Zoom [link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/88689958252?pwd=OEhQOGVBUXA5Zml4ZkJoRmxqcUhGdz09]. This is our first public meeting since 2018. Come hear about our current status and join a discussion about how best to grow the bid, move forward, and succeed together.

Upcoming Appearances & Help Needed!

Seattle 2025 will host its first bid party at Norwescon (April 14-17) with more appearances and parties expected at Balticon  (May 27-30) and the current Worldcon, Chicon 8  (September 1-5). We need help staffing club tables at Balticon and Chicon and help with party hosting at all three events.  Will you be at these cons?  We also need to recruit regional coordinators to help manage future convention appearance outside the Pacific Northwest.  Can you pitch in?  Here’s what to do:

  • Send us an email at info@seattlein2025.org describing what you can do to help!
  • Come to the bid volunteer meeting (virtually) on March 6!
  • Buy a supporting membership and opt in to the newsletter announcements!
  • Sign up for the newsletter without buying a membership here!

We Are Ready to Gratefully Accept Your Support

It takes resources to throw a Worldcon. Our parent organization, Seattle Genre Alliance, is a newly registered nonprofit corporation in Washington State, with 501(c)(3) status pending. We have a bank account, an updated website, and are ready to accept your donations. You can support us at Tall ($50), Grande ($150) or Triple Shot ($300) levels, with a dollar-for-dollar credit towards an adult attending membership to the Worldcon if our bid is selected. Triple Shot supporters will receive special tokens of our gratitude at unexpected times!

All of this and more can be found at https://www.seattlein2025.org. Click now! We’ll wait.
